WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - Freshman Chelsea Douglas scored 11 points, including two three-pointers, but it was not enough as No. 5 Duke topped Wake Forest 82-39 Friday evening at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Duke improves to 22-2 (8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) on the season, while Wake Falls to 12-14 (3-7 ACC).
Jasmine Thomas led four players in double figures for the Blue Devils with 17 points, Krystal Thomas and Allison Vernerey totaled 12 apiece, and Chelsea Gray added ten. Thomas led all players with 12 rebounds.
Duke shot 50 percent from the floor, while Wake Forest was limited to only 26 percent shooting on 14-54 from the floor. The Deacon bench contributed over half of the points on the night, scoring 22 of Wake Forest's 39 points.
Mykala Walker scored the first two buckets for the Deacs, but Duke took an 11-4 lead early into the first half. The Blue Devils extended that lead to 23-10 with just under nine minutes remaining until Douglas knocked down a three pointer from the top of the key to pull the Deacs to within ten. Waters knocked down a jumper soon after to close the Duke lead to eight points.
The Devils went on a mini 8-0 run near the end of the first half, but Garcia grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw by Waters to end the run and close the Duke lead to 31-17.
Waters and point guard Brooke Thomas knocked down a pair of jumpers near the end of the half to pull the Deacs within 14 at 35-21, but Jasmine Thomas nailed a three-pointer with only 11 seconds remaining to give Duke a 38-21 lead heading into the break.
Lakevia Boykin knocked down a deep three-pointer to open the second half and pull the Deacs to within 14 points, but Wake Forest would come no closer for the rest of the game.
Freshman Jaymee Carnes hit Wake's third three-pointer of the game with just over five minutes remaining, and Douglas nailed one soon after for her second of the game.
Wake Forest returns to action Thursday evening when they host Florida State in a 7 p.m. contest.
