Four Deacons Claim First-Place Titles at Liberty Quad Meet

LYNCHBURG, VA. - The Wake Forest men's track and field team capped off one of their most dominating performances of the season Friday evening at the Liberty Quad Meet. A number of Deacons turned in first-place finishes, including Josh Harris in the 60-meter dash and Thomas Morrison in the 800-meter run.
Freshman Alexander Rose finished first overall in the one mile run, and Terence Davis finished in first place in the high jump to lead the Deacs.
Wake Forest will return to the track next weekend when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of how the Deacs performed at the Liberty Quad Meet on Friday.
60-Meter Dash Finals
Wake Forest's starting running back on the football team, Josh Harris, shined in his collegiate track debut, turning in a time of 6.93 in the event to take first place overall. He ran slightly faster in the prelims with a time of 6.86, and just barely missed edging Kevin Marion's school record time of 6.77 set in 2008. Fellow football player Chris Givens finished fifth overall with a time of 7.14 in his collegiate track debut, and freshman Hiter Harris finished in seventh place in the finals with a time of 7.29.
60-Meter Hurdles
In the hurdles, all four Deacons advanced past the preliminary round, with Malcolm Nunley leading the way. Nunley finished third in the finals with a time of 8.62, while Alex Hill finished fourth (8.77) and Scott McCullough claimed seventh place (9.10). Freshman Spencer Carter-Carpenter rounded out the event with an eighth place finish in a time of 9.60 seconds.
200-Meter Dash
Hiter Harris was the lone competitor in this event for the Deacs, and he crossed the line in 23.51 to place third.
400-Meter Dash
Malcolm Nunley turned in a time of 52.87 seconds to place fourth in the 400-meter dash.
800-Meter Run
A handful of Deacs toed the line for the 800-meter run, and Thomas Morrison led the way with a first-place finish in a new personal-best time of 1:53.40. The Deacs also claimed the next three spots, with sophomore Sean Lunkenheimer finishing in second place (1:54.58), Kyle Eager taking third place (2:00.26), and Nate Guthals claiming fourth (2:00.28). Sophomore Jake Graham crossed the line for Wake Forest in seventh place with a time of 2:03.41.
1,000-Meter Run
Four Deacs competed in this event on the evening, with Anthony Marois leading the way with a fifth place finish in a time of 2:35.77. Tom Finneran finished close behind in sixth (2:35.81), Devin Huizenga claimed seventh place (2:42.60), and Garret Drogosch finished in eight place (2:51.67).
One Mile Run
The Deacs nearly swept this event, as eight different runners crossed the line, led by Alexander Rose's first place finish with a time of 4:14.41. Marcus Dillon was right behind Rose, finishing second in 4:14.93. Nate Guthals finished third with a time of 4:19.95, and Anthony Marois took fourth place with a time of 4:19.98. Rounding out the finishes in this event were Tom Finneran in fifth place (4:23.06), Jake Graham in seventh (4:25.61), Garret Drogosch in eighth (4:27.26), and Devin Huizenga in tenth place (4:29.95).
4x400-Meter Relay
The relay team of Sean Lunkenheimer, Malcolm Nunley, Kevin Smith, and Alex Hill finished in second place overall, crossing the line in a time of 3:27.88.
High Jump
The Deacs claimed the top three spots in this event, led by junior Terence Davis, who claimed first-place honors with a season-best jump of 6-04.25 (1.94 meters). Senior Aaron Larue also cleared a height of 6-04.25, but finished in second place due to scratching once at an earlier height. Scott McCullough took third place with a jump of 6-02.25, and Alex Hill finished in fifth by clearing a height of 6-00.50.
Pole Vault
Trey Blanton finished third overall in his specialty event, clearing a height of 14-09.00. Scott McCullough finished in sixth (12-03.50), and Alex Hill claimed eighth place with a mark of 11-03.75.
Shot Put
Michael and Nate Wooten were the lone competitors for the Deacs in the shot put, and Michael led the way with a throw of 45-08.50 to place fourth. Nate was close behind in sixth place with a mark of 39-08.75.
Weight Throw
The two Wooten brothers once again led the way for the Deacs in the throws, as Michael finished in second place with a throw of 40-03.25 and Nate finished fourth overall with a throw of 34-02.75.
Long Jump
Brandon Terry turned in a terrific performance on the evening, finishing in second place with a jump of 23-00.00. Trey Blanton also jumped for the Deacs, reaching a mark of 19-08.75 to place eighth overall.
