Postgame Quotes Florida State 84, Wake Forest 66
February 19, 2011
Joel Coliseum - Winston-Salem, N.C.
Wake Forest Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik
Opening Statement...
"Just two totally different halves, plain and simple. What happened between the first half and the second half is a mystery to me, to be quite frank. Did we exhale? We sure looked like it, and we came out very lethargic for whatever reason. We let them jump on us and we never recovered. We need to grow up in that regard."
On what caused the team to perform differently in the second half...
"Energy, this is a game of energy. Same schemes, same everything. First half we're blitzing ball screens, getting our hands on balls. We were taking charge and starting well. We were active and we were tight on the boards. Nothing changed. This game is about will, passion and energy. We need everybody to perform well."
On the transition play of the Deacons...
"They [Florida State] shot 18 percent when our defense was set. They had 13 points in transition where we just lost people. We lost Miller a couple of times, and what is defensive transition? It's just a will and a want to. It's just unbridled effort, that's what that is."
Florida State Head Coach Leonard Hamilton
Opening Statement...
"I thought Wake Forest did an excellent job in the first half of executing their offense, and they basically got any shot that they wanted. The system that they use tested all of our defensive principles, and it was a challenge for us just to get acclimated to that style. We were very fortunate to only be down two at halftime. Every time we made a mistake, they made us pay. We got on a run with about 11 minutes to go in the first half, so at least we got back in the game. We got a little bit more aggressive offensively in the second half, and we were able to extend the lead. We played a lot of people, and I thought that made the difference in the game. We were fresh during certain periods of the second half, and it gave us an opportunity to extend our lead."
On the impact of not having Chris Singleton available to play due to injury...
"We tried to develop the mindset that we can't be overly concerned by those things that we have no control over. What we do have control of is the approach that we take each and every day during practice. We have to perform with the team that we have available. We cannot make any excuses. We're not the only team that's been hit by the injury bug, and we have to find a way to overcome it. The most important thing in this scenario is that Chris gets healthy and is able to continue playing at a high level."
On the difference in the second half...
"We were not executing well in the first half, but we needed to get out and do what we had in our game plan. We're not the most efficient team right now. We're still a little bit in transition. We're constantly in transition trying to get that rhythm. We thought we had a nice feel for our rotations, and then we had to regroup again today."
