WILMINGTON, NC - The No. 25 Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round 310 and finished tied for third at the Seahawk Invitational on Monday at the Landfall Country Club.
Individually, sophomore Charlie Harrison recorded the first top-5 finish of his career. Harrison came into the day seeking his first collegiate victory after superb rounds of 72-69 on Sunday. He wound-up carding a final round 78 and would finish in a tie for third at 3-over par. Prior to this week, Harrison's highest finish was tied for 15th at the JU Invitational last spring.
As a team, the Deacs finished tied for third with East Carolina at 24-over par. Wake led the tournament by two shots heading into the final round after rounds of 291 and 287 on Sunday. But a final round 310 opened the door for host UNC Wilmington to sneak in and take the team title. The Seahawks fired a final round 296 to finish two shots ahead of Liberty.
"We played really well for the first 10 holes or so but the wind really picked-up on the back nine and we just didn't play well coming in," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We're all a little disappointed right now but we can't dwell to much on the negatives. Charlie (Harrison) played really well yesterday and was right in the think of it today. Beau (Cutts) had it going early today. So we had some good things happen this week and hopefully we can learn from them. We'll need to draw upon these experiences down the road in the ACCs or the regionals. This is a great group of kids and they'll keep their heads up and move on to the next one."
UNC Wilmington's Thomas Bass carded a final round even-par 72 to take medalist honors by one shot over Preston Dembowiak of Liberty. Bass finished the 54-hole event at even-par 216 while Dembowiak's final round 72 left him at 1-over 217.
In addition to Harrison, sophomore Evan Beck racked-up his fifth top-5 finish in seven events this season. The Virginia Beach, NC, native carded a team-low 76 on Monday to finish tied for fifth at 4-over par.
Freshman Beau Cutts fired a final round 77 to finish in a tie for 38th at 18-over, while senior Justin Bryant and junior Lee Bedford each finished tied for 24th. Bryant shot a 79 on Monday and Bedford posted an 82.
John Varol, who played as an individual this week, rounded out the Deacons as he finished 53rd after a final round 82.
Wake Forest will return to action in less than two weeks as it heads to the General Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach. The first two rounds are scheduled for Sunday, March, 13 with the final round on Monday, March, 14.
