CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia used a pair of runs in the second half to break-open a nine-point and cruise to a 73-46 victory over Wake Forest Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The victory improves Virginia to 13-11 on the year and 2-6 in the ACC while the loss drops the Deacons to 11-13 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Telia McCall and Ataira Franklin led the Cavaliers with 12 points each while China Crosby chipped-in with 11. Virginia shot 51 percent (25-of-49) for the game including 5-of-8 from three-point range.
Senior Brittany Waters led Wake Forest with nine points while freshman Chelsea Douglas added seven and Secily Ray and Lakevia Boykin each finished with six. The Deacs were 31 percent (17-of-54) from the floor and led 35-32 on the boards.
The telling stat of the game was Virginia forced Wake into a season-high 27 turnovers and scored 33 points off those take-aways.
Virginia took an early 10-4 lead but a pair of three-pointers by Boykin and a put-back by Garcia helped the Deacons tie the score at 15-15 with eight minutes left in the half. Coming out of the media timeout, Crosby connected on a jumper and then hit a three-pointer a couple of possessions later to cap a 7-0 Cavalier run that gave UVA a 22-15 at the 4:49 mark.
Whitney Edwards made a baseline jumper to push the lead out to nine and it would eventually swell to much as 11 after a McCall lay-in with 1:45 to play. Both teams struggled a bit in the final minute until Lindsy Wright stuck-back an offensive rebound with 12 seconds left to send the teams into the break with the Hoos in front 29-20.
Crosby led all scorers with nine points in the opening 20 minutes while Boykin paced the Deacs with six points. Virginia held a 19-14 edge on the boards and both teams committed 11 turnovers.
The Cavaliers came out of the break and immediately extended their lead to 13 at 35-22. After Douglas hit a pair of free throw for the Deacs, UVA went on a 6-0 run thanks to a lay-up by Franklin and four-straight free throws by McCall. Mykala Walker stopped the run with a three-pointer but a jumper and a three-pointer by Franklin on back-to-back possessions gave the Hoos a 19-point lead at 46-27 with 12:20 to play in the game.
The teams traded baskets and then a jumper by Chelsea Shine sparked an 11-2 Cavalier run that would remove all doubt and give Virginia its largest lead at 59-31 with just over nine minutes to play. Wake didn't get closer than 23 the rest of the way and the Cavaliers would take a 73-46 victory.
The Deacons will remain on the road this Sunday as they travel to Virginia Tech. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. from Cassell Coliseum. Wake Forest won the first meeting of the year with Tech, 62-54 in Winston-Salem.
