Wake Forest will look to build on its momentum from an ACC series win over North Carolina this past weekend when it travels to Charlotte on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The Demon Deacons will step out of conference play after taking two of three from the Tar Heels. Wake Forest has now won three consecutive series in conference play, dating back to last season.
In the trek to Charlotte, Wake Forest will be in search of its first win on the road. The Deacs traveled to LSU during the first weekend of the season and dropped all three to the Tigers before losing 10-2 at Coastal Carolina last Wednesday.
Charlotte marks the second school from the Atlantic 10 on the Deacons' schedule this season, as Wake dropped a 5-3 decision to Fordham on March 4.
After falling in the series opener to North Carolina 7-1 on Friday, the Deacon bats came alive on Saturday to even the series at one game apiece. The biggest contributor to Wake's 10-2 win on Saturday was third baseman Carlos Lopez who went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Pat Blair also went 3-for-4, as he collected two doubles and an RBI.
Wake Forest then won the series with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory on Sunday. The Demon Deacons found themselves down 4-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning before a three-run home run by first baseman Matt Conway capped a four-run inning to tie the score.
Conway then came up big in the Deacs' last at bat when he singled through the right side to bring home Steven Brooks from second base for the game-winning run.
Tim Cooney and John McLeod picked up the wins on the mound for Wake Forest. Cooney started Saturday and went 7.2 innings, while McLeod pitched the final 1.2 innings of Sunday's game without giving up a run. The win was the first of McLeod's career.
Michael Dimock also pitched a great game on Sunday, working a scoreless three innings of relief to help the Deacons remain in striking distance.
Freshman Chris Willson, who has both of Wake Forest's save this season, will make his first-career start against Charlotte.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will be back at home for four straight games, beginning with a three game series with ACC-rival Miami on March 18-20. Charlotte will then make the return trip to Winston-Salem on Tuesday, March 22, at 6 p.m. before the Deacs begin a seven-game road trip.
