MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round 307 on Monday and finished 12th at the General Jim Hackler Invitational. Individually, junior Lee Bedford led the Deacons as he finished tied for 17th at 8-over par.

The best round of the day for the Deacs came from freshman Beau Cutts, who fired a 1-over 73. Cutts, who was playing as an individual this week, made three birdies and 11 pars in his round, which was his lowest of the tournament.

Senior Justin Bryant also finished the weekend well with a final round 2-over 74. Bryant had a rocky start to the day, making five bogeys in his first seven holes. But the St. Louis, Mo., native played the final 11 holes at 2-under par to post a 74. Bryant finished tied for 65th at 23-over.

As a team, the Deacons got off to a tough start yesterday, posting rounds of 307 and 315 and were in 13th place through two rounds. Another 307 on Monday allowed Wake to jump USC Upstate and finish in 12th place at 65-over par.

"It was just one of those weeks," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "It was a tough golf course and we just didn't play it well at all. But we're not going to dwell on it. You have to have a short memory and just move on. We're heading to the Hootie in a couple of weeks, which is a tournament we've played well at, so we'll focus on that."

Second round leader Virginia ran into a little trouble midway through the final round and would settle for a 10-over 298 on Monday. That opened the door for defending national champion Augusta State to step in. The Eagles fired a 7-under 281, the lowest round of the tournament, and took the team title by three shots over the Cavaliers. ASU started the day 14-shots behind Virginia.

In the individual race, Henrik Norlander led Augusta State's charge with a final 5-under 67 and took medalist honors by four shots over Amory Davis of Virginia.

For the Deacs, Bedford off-set a couple of double-bogeys on Monday with four birdies and finished with a round of 75. His tied for 17th finish is his seventh top-20 finish in nine events this year.

Sophomore Evan Beck finished his tournament with a round of 5-over 77 and finished tied for 38th at 16-over par. Fellow sophomore Charlie Harrison carded his second-straight 81 to finish tied for 59th while freshman John Varol rounded-out the scores with a 92.

The Demon Deacons will return to action on Sunday, March 27, when they travel to Awandaw, SC, to participate in The Hootie at Bulls Bay. Wake finished runner-up at the Hootie last season on the strength of Bedford's final round 63.
