WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a strong showing at the Wake Forest Open last weekend, the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will return to action Friday afternoon at the Raleigh Relays.
Track events are slated to begin Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. with the 5,000-meter run, while field events will start at 10 a.m. with the men's discus throw.
Senior Tyler Dodds is coming off a terrific showing in the 400-meters in Wake Forest's outdoor debut last weekend, as he placed third in the event with a new personal-best time of 47.68 seconds.
That mark currently places Dodds at the top of the ACC charts, and he also ranks fifth in the conference in the 200-meters.
In 400-meter hurdle action, the trio of Sean Lunkenheimer, Justin Bookheimer, and Malcolm Nunley will look to lead the Deacs after solid performances at the Wake Forest Open. Lunkenheimer led the way with an 11th place finish last weekend in a time of 54.58, and Nunley finished close behind in 54.94 to take 13th.
The Deacs will field a strong contingent of distance runners this weekend, with sophomore Garret Drogosch and redshirt-freshman Devin Huizenga entered in the 5,000-meter run. Friday will mark the first time this season that either runner has competed in the event.
In the 1500-meters, sophomores Jake Graham and Tom Finneran, along with junior Paul Loeser, will look to follow up after terrific performances last weekend. Graham finished the 1500 in a time of 4:05.41, while Finneran and Loeser both competed in the 3,000-meter run.
In the field events, sophomore Ben Lincoln enters as the ACC leader in the javelin throw after reaching a mark of 222-05 at the Wake Forest Open.
Along with Lincoln, redshirt-sophomore Trey Blanton and sophomore Luke Hadden will also compete in the javelin throw. Hadden threw for a distance of 188-08 last weekend to place 13th overall, while Blanton finished 20th with a mark of 175-02.
On the women's side, freshman sprinter Mytoia Gathings will compete in her specialty event, the 100-meter dash. Gathings turned in a time of 12.34 seconds in the preliminary rounds of the Wake Forest Open, good enough to advance to the finals where she placed 11th overall.
Fellow freshman Allison Johnson looks to continue her success in the 400-meter hurdles, as she placed fourth overall last weekend in a time of 1:01.21. Johnson finished first in her heat by a significant margin, and she currently ranks fourth in the event in the ACC.
In the distance events, senior Marley Burns will compete in the 5,000-meter run, while junior Laura Rapp is set to race in the 1,500-meters. Rapp turned in a personal-best time of 4:50.50 in the 1500 last weekend to place 20th overall.
Both the men's and women's squads will field relay teams for the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800-meter relays. The men will also compete in the 4x200 meter relay.
Relay participants for the women include Erin Brooks, Myesha Barr, Caitlin Hartnett, Casey Fowler, Dina Nosenko, and Jordyn Glaser.
For the men, Alex Hill, Hiter Harris, Mike Mastanduno, Kevin Smith, Alex Rose, and Allan Lunkenheimer are just a few of the runners who will race in the four relay races for the Deacs.
