Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Two Demon Deacons earned wins over ranked players, but Wake Forest fell 5-2 to No. 15 Clemson on Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Center.

The No. 48 Deacs fall to 6-8 (0-4 ACC), while the Tigers improve to 14-5 (2-2 ACC).

Cold temperatures forced the match to the Indoor Tennis Center, and despite missing one of their top players Kathryn Talbert due to injury, the Demon Deacons put up a good fight against the Tigers.

Bumped up to the No. 2 position for the first time this season because of Talbert's absence, Emilee Malvehy posted one of the most impressive wins of her career, easily dispatching No. 62 Keri Wong 6-3, 6-2. Kayla Duncan earned her first ranked singles victory of the season at the No. 3 slot, cruising past No. 113 Nelly Ciolkowski 6-1, 6-2.

The Tigers earned wins at the top and bottom doubles positions to take the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. Wake's lone doubles win came at No. 2 where Ryann Cutillo and Kayla Duncan, won a marathon tiebreak to take down Maria Belaya and Carolina Magnusson 9-8 (11).

On Court 1, Martina Pavelec and Emilee Malvehy had jumped out to a 3-0 lead over No. 1 Josipa Bek and Keri Wong, but the top-ranked Tiger tandem regrouped to win eight of the next nine games, earning an 8-4 victory to clinch the point. Clemson's Klara Vyskocilova and Laurianne Henry had earlier posted an 8-1 win at the No. 3 position.

The Tigers picked up quick singles wins at No. 6 and No. 5 to jump out to a 3-0 lead. After Duncan and Malvehy pulled two points back for the Deacs, No. 12 Bek closed out the match for Clemson at the top position, defeating No. 30 Pavelec 6-1, 6-4. Ryann Cutillo retired at No. 5 after aggravating an injury in the second set, to leave the final score 5-2.

The Deacs will face another Top 25 team tomorrow when they take on No. 20 Geogia Tech at noon. Due to forecasted cold temperatures and rain, the match will likely be played at the Indoor Tennis Center.
