GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Matt Conway has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.
This is the first time that the Wake Forest first baseman has won the award in his career, and he is the first Demon Deacon to earn the recognition since Willy Fox did so on March 12, 2007.
Conway was outstanding at the plate all week, starting all four games in the cleanup position and going 7-for-14 with three home runs, two doubles, eight RBIs, four runs scored and a 1.286 slugging percentage.
The Birmingham, Mich., native started the week in fine fashion with a 2-for-3 performance in an 11-1 win over UNC Greensboro. Against the Spartans, Conway recorded the first two-homer game of his career and drove in four runs.
He then began the weekend against Fordham by going 3-for-4 with another home run, two RBIs and a run scored on Friday night. Conway finished the weekend by picking up one hit against both Towson and Radford. Both hits were doubles, as he also recorded two more RBIs against Towson.
His numbers on the year rank him among the elite in the ACC, as he is currently tied for second in RBIs (18), tied for third in home runs (3), tied for sixth in total bases (28) and is seventh in slugging percentage (.675).
Conway will look to lead Wake Forest again this week when they host four games. The Deacs will begin by playing Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before playing their first ACC series of the season against North Carolina on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All four games will be played at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
