WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest head field hockey coach Jennifer Averill has announced her recruiting class for the fall of 2011, a group that includes two student-athletes.
Anna Kozniuk and Letitia Nichols will all be joining the Demon Deacon field hockey team. Nichols is a goalkeeper, while Kozniuk is primarily a midfielder or defender.
"We're bringing in a small class in terms of numbers, but we feel that the two players joining us are very talented and high-caliber athletes," said Averill.
Anna Kozniuk is from North Vancouver, Canada, and has already gained much international experience. As a member of the Canadian Senior National Team, Kozniuk has already attained 39 CAPS and won Gold Medals at the 2009 and 2010 Canadian Senior National Championships.
Kozniuk was a First Team All-Star every year at Argyle Secondary school, serving as a team captain for three of those seasons. To go along with her success in field hockey, she was also selected to the U18 National Ice Hockey squad.
"We have long been awaiting the arrival of Anna on our campus. Her experience on the national level will serve as a great asset to us," said Averill. "She will be a huge impact for us, as she is type of player who will immediately make a difference. Not only will she help us technically with her excellent distribution skills, but she will allow us to be a better tactical team as well."
Letitia Nichols played five years as a goalkeeper at Norfolk Academy in Virginia Beach, Va., as she was the first eighth grader in school history to make the varsity team. In her time at Norfolk Academy, Nichols earned First Team All-State and First Team All-Conference accolades and led her team to a state finals appearance in 2010.
To go along with her five varsity letters in field hockey, Nichols excelled in other sports as well, garnering varsity letters in softball, lacrosse and crew. Nichols has also gained some international experience, playing for the U17 National Team and receiving a bronze medal at the Youth Pan American Games in Uruguay.
"Leticia has good, solid skills as a goalkeeper, and she also bring some national experience to the team that will be invaluable," said Averill.
The Demon Deacons finished the 2010 season with a 10-10 overall record and earned a trip to the 2010 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, losing in the First Round to Princeton.
