COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Adam Lee won the clinching match in three sets as the Wake Forest men's tennis team closed out the regular season on a high note, edging Maryland 4-3 in College Park, Md. on Sunday.

The No. 34 Demon Deacons finish tied for sixth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 12-10 (5-6 ACC) record. Wake will be the No. 7 seed in the 2011 ACC Championships and will take on No. 10 Clemson on Thursday at noon at Cary Tennis Park. The Deacons beat the Tigers 6-1 on the road in the regular season.

The Deacs have made the semifinals of the ACC Tournament in each of the past four seasons, the only team other than perennial powerhouse Virginia to accomplish that feat.

"We've had an up-and-down season, but I think we're finally starting to play the way we hoped that we could have all year," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "We have had tremendous success in the ACC Tournament the past few years, and I hope that we're going to be able to write a new chapter this week."

The No. 48 Terrapins end the year in ninth place in the conference with an 11-11 (3-8 ACC) mark and will open the ACC Championships with Florida State.

Wake got the match against the Terps off to a hot start with a dominating doubles performance. The Deacs dropped only four total games across the three matches en route to sweeping the doubles point.

At No. 1 doubles, No. 50 Iain Atkinson/David Hopkins shutout Maros Horny and John Collins 8-0. Tripper Carleton and Adam Lee clinched the point with an 8-2 win over Andy Mcgee and Jesse Kiuru at No. 2, and Jonathan Wolff and Danny Kreyman followed with an 8-2 victory over Tommy Laine and Mathias Sarrazin at No. 3.

"Our doubles was absolutely unbelievable today," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "It was by far the best that we've played all season. You don't see the kind of scores that we put up very often in ACC matches."

Singles would be a little closer. No. 85 Wolff pushed the Deacon advantage to 2-0, cruising by Collins 6-1, 6-1. After Horny made the score 2-1 with a win at No. 2, Kreyman put the Deacs on the verge of clinching with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Kiuru at No. 4.

Things began to tighten up a bit as Maryland's Wyss upset No. 105 Atkinson at No. 3 and Laine had taken the first set from Hopkins at No. 5.

Lee came through as he has so often this season for the Demon Deacons, outlasting Mcgee 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory for Wake. The freshman has clinched four matches for the Deacons this season, the most of anyone on the team.
