CARY, N.C. - Senior Jonathan Wolff moved into the top-ten on the Wake Forest career singles victories list, and the No. 32 Wake Forest men's tennis picked up a 4-0 victory over Clemson Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the ACC Championships at Cary Tennis Park.
The seventh-seeded Deacs improve to 13-10 on the season, while 10th-seeded Clemson drops to 15-12.
With the win, the Deacs advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals against second-seeded North Carolina. The match is set to begin at noon at Cary Tennis Park.
The Deacs faced North Carolina in last year's quarterfinals and posted a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Tar Heels. Then-freshman Danny Kreyman clinched the match for the Deacs with a hard-fought win at the No. 5 position against Cameron Ahari.
Wolff picked up the clinching match of the day for the Deacs at the top singles position to move into a tie for tenth place on the Wake Forest career singles victories list with 86 wins. Wolff ties Steven Forman's mark of 86 victories set from 2007-10.
David Hopkins and Iain Atkinson also picked up singles victories in straight sets to help solidify the win for the Deacs.
Wake Forest jumped out to a strong start early by claiming the doubles point with wins at the second and third position. Adam Lee and Tripper Carleton teamed up at the No. 2 position to post an 8-5 victory, while Wolff and Danny Kreyman followed close behind with an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The 39th-ranked tandem of Hopkins and Atkinson owned an 8-7 lead at the top position when the match was called.
In singles play, 124th-ranked Atkinson quickly retired Clemson's Kevin Galloway 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 position to pick up his 24th singles victory of the season.
Hopkins posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory of his own at the No. 5 spot against Gerardo Meza to give the Deacs a 3-0 lead in the match.
The deciding match of the day came at the top singles position, where Wolff claimed a straight-set victory over Derek DiFazio. The Sarasota, Fla. native easily picked up a 6-1 win in the first set, but he had to work just a bit harder for the victory in the second.
Wolff found himself down 5-4 to DiFazio but battled back to knot the score at six games apiece and force the tiebreaker. The two traded points back and forth before Wolff finally built a 6-4 lead. DiFazio would come back to tie the score at eight, but Wolff reeled off the next two points to take the tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.
Sophomore Danny Kreyman and freshman Adam Lee each posted first set victories on their courts, as Kreyman battled back after being down 3-0 early to take the 7-5 win. Lee notched a 6-2 victory in his first set against Zachary Rigsby at the No. 6 position.
Sophomore Tripper Carleton dropped his first set to Yannick Maden but battled back to claim a dominating 6-0 victory in the second set. Carleton was leading 4-2 in the third set when the match was abandoned.
