Dillon, Loeser Lead Deacs in Steeplechase at ACC Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - Four members of the Wake Forest men's track and field team advanced past Saturday afternoon's qualifying rounds and into tomorrow's finals as the Deacs wrapped up competition on the second day of the ACC Outdoor Championships at Duke University's Wallace Wade Stadium.
Sean Lunkenheimer and Malcolm Nunley each advanced in the 400-meter hurdles, while senior Tyler Dodds qualified for the finals in the 400-meters. Freshman Alexander Rose was the final Deac to advance past the preliminary rounds, as he will compete in the finals of the 1500m run tomorrow.
In the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Marcus Dillon paced the Deacs with a fourth-place finish, while Paul Loeser followed close behind in sixth place. Loeser's time surpassed his previous personal-best by more than 15 seconds.
The Wake Forest men's squad currently ranks tied for sixth in the team standings with 23 points after the second day of competition. Duke leads all teams with 70.50 points, followed by Florida State (51 points) and Virginia Tech (46.50).
ACC Championship action will continue tomorrow beginning at noon with the men's pole vault and women's hammer throw. Action on the track is set to start at 4 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.

Below is an event-by-event breakdown of competition from Day Two of the ACC Championships.
Decathlon:
Alex Hill placed fifth overall in the decathlon, finishing with a total of 6,035 points.
110m Hurdles (Event 6 of 10)
Hill placed fourth in the 110m hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 15.35.
Discus Throw (Event 7 of 10)
Hill once again claimed a fourth-place finish, as he threw for a distance of 106-1 (32.35 meters).
Pole Vault (Event 8 of 10)
Hill no heighted in the pole vault, which cost him a significant amount of points, but he would bounce back in the final two events of the decathlon.
Javelin Throw (Event 9 of 10)
The junior from North Wales, Pa. enjoyed a great deal of success in the javelin, as he finished third overall with a throw of 151-9 (46.25 m).
1500m (Event 10 of 10)
The final event in the decathlon, and perhaps the most grueling, proved to be no problem at all for Hill, as he completed the distance in a time of 4:44.21 en route to a fourth-place finish.
400m (Prelims)
Senior Tyler Dodds advanced to the finals of the 400m in his last ACC Championships, as he finished second overall in the preliminary rounds with a time of 48.19. Kevin Smith also raced in the event for the Deacs, finishing in 50.68 to place 16th in the prelims.
400m Hurdles (Prelims)
A strong duo represented Wake Forest in the 400m hurdles, as both Sean Lunkenheimer and Malcolm Nunley advanced past the preliminary rounds and on to tomorrow's finals.
Lunkenheimer finished first in his heat and second overall in a time of 53.14, while Nunley tied his personal-best mark of 53.95 to place second in his heat and eighth overall.
800m (Prelims)
Sophomore Nate Guthals led the way for the Deacs in the 800m run as he crossed the finish line in a new personal-best time of 1:52.80, just narrowly missing out on qualifying for the finals.
Freshman Kyle Eager performed well in his first ACC Championship, finishing in 1:55.69 to claim 18th place in the preliminary rounds, while sophomore Michael McEnany placed 22nd with a time of 1:56.34
1500m (Prelims)
Freshman Alexander Rose continued to lead the Deacs in the 1500m run, just as he has done throughout the entire season. The Brisbane, Australia native finished sixth in the prelims to advance to tomorrow's finals with a time of 3:49.42.
Sophomore Tom Finneran also raced in the 1500m for Wake Forest, finishing in 4:03.35 to place 29th overall.
3,000m Steeplechase
A trio of Deacons all turned in new personal-best times in the 3,000m steeplechase, led by senior Marcus Dillon's fourth-place finish with a time of 8:58.02.
Junior Paul Loeser crossed the line close behind Dillon in 8:58.53 to place sixth overall. The local product from Winston-Salem shattered his previous top time of 9:15.02, set two weekends ago at the Duke Invitational.
Sophomore Jake Graham was the final competitor in the event for Wake Forest, and he placed 15th overall in a time of 9:23.66, surpassing his previous top mark of 9:25.74 recorded at the Duke Invitational.
