WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest head men's golf coach Jerry Haas has announced the signing of Raleigh, NC, native Cyrus Stewart for the class of 2011.
"Cyrus is a player that coach Dan (Walters) and I think a lot of," said Haas. "He has tremendous length off the tee and is a great athlete. I've known him since he came to golf camp in eighth grade and I kind of kept my eye on him because you could tell even at that age that he was a good athlete."
Stewart is a two-sport standout at Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. He earned All-State honors each of the last three seasons and has been named to the All-Conference team each of those seasons as well. Stewart is also a standout on the basketball court, helping the Capitals to a 39-18 record over the last two seasons, including four wins in the state tournament.
"I think Cyrus will do very well here at Wake Forest," Haas continued. "Coach Dan (Walters) and I are really excited to have him join the team. He looks like a Wake Forest golfer and he carries himself very well. We kind of compare him to one of our current players in Charlie Harrison. They both have the same kind of makeup. If he can come in and work as hard as Charlie does, I think he'll be a very fine player."
Stewart joins Brandon Ng in the Deacons' class of 2011. Ng, who is from Toronto, Canada, is one of the top Canadian amateur players.
