Deacs Fall to Elon 5-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A night after Wake Forest collected 13 runs and 15 hits, the Elon pitching staff quieted the Deacon bats, as the Phoenix claimed a 5-0 victory Wednesday evening at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
The loss drops Wake Forest's record to 17-26 on the year, while the Phoenix are now 27-17.
Elon's David Whitehead earned the win after pitching seven innings and giving up just three hits. He is now 4-1 on the year. Niko Spezial gave up two runs in a third of an inning and falls to 1-1.
Relievers John Brebbia, Greg Amorosso and Mitch Conner combined to pitch a perfect final two innings for Elon. The Phoenix staff also combined to retire the final 15 Wake Forest batters of the game.
Conor Keniry doubled, while Matt Conway and Jack Fischer both picked up singles to account for the three Demon Deacon hits on the night.
Elon scored two runs in the fifth before getting a two-run homer from Sebastian Gomez and a solo homer from Garrett Koster in the seventh to build the lead to 5-0.
John McLeod started for Wake Forest and pitched a scoreless two innings of work before the game has delayed for 36 minutes due to rain. After the break, Nate Jones went to the mound for the Deacs and also kept Elon off the board for two innings.
Michael Dimock pitched the longest for Wake Forest on the night, going 3.2 innings and striking out five batters. Gabe Feldman relieved Dimock to start the ninth and recorded the first two outs of the inning, and Eli Robins came in to get the final out.
Wake Forest will now have an eight-day layoff during as the players will take final exams. The Demon Deacons will be back in action when they host Boston College on May 6-8 in a three-game ACC series.
