DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's track and field team concluded competition on the opening day of the Duke Invitational Friday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium with a handful of top-five finishes.
Ben Lincoln led the way in the javelin throw as he has done all season, finishing fourth overall with a throw of 220-10.
Freshman Alexander Rose paced the Deacs in the 1500-meter run with a fifth place finish, while Garret Drogosch and Devin Huizenga claimed fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run.
Day Two of the Duke Invitational will resume Saturday morning with the women's discus throw at 9 a.m. The women's 800-meter developmental race will kick off action on the track at 9:45 a.m.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown of all the action from Day One of the Duke Invitational.
400-meter Dash
Junior sprinter Kevin Smith turned in a new personal-best time of 49.66 seconds in the 400-meters to place fifth overall.
400-meter Hurdles
Freshman Malcolm Nunley finished in 54.84 in the 400-meter hurdles en route to placing first in his heat and 14th overall. The time was Nunley's second-best performance of the season, as his top time of 53.95 came last weekend at Auburn's Tiger Track Classic.
1500-meter Run
Freshman Alexander Rose led a trio of Deacs in the 1500-meter run, finishing fifth in a time of 3:49.01. Friday marked the first time in Rose's young career that he has competed in the 1500-meter run, as he has raced in both the mile and the 3,000-meters this season.
Sophomores Tom Finneran and Anthony Marois each turned in new personal-best times, as Finneran finished in 3:52.82 to place 14th, and Marois also claimed 32nd place in 4:01.10.
Finneran surpassed his previous best time of 3:57.15 set earlier this season at the Raleigh Relays, while Marois crushed his older time by thirteen seconds.
3,000-meter Run
Garret Drogosch and Devin Huizenga each turned in top-five performances in the 3,000-meter run, as Drogosch took fourth in 8:32.72 and Huizenga claimed fifth place with a time of 8:37.15.
Drogosch edged his previous-best time by a mere 0.15 seconds, while Huizenga surpassed his previous-best time of 8:40.48.
Javelin Throw
The Deacs once again excelled in their strongest field event on the men's side, with sophomore Ben Lincoln leading the way. The Hingham, Mass., native placed fourth overall with a throw of 220-10 (67.32 meters), his third-best mark of the season.
Sophomore Luke Hadden finished directly behind Lincoln in fifth place with a throw of 195-02 (59.50 meters), while Trey Blanton claimed sixth place with a new personal-best mark of 181-0 (55.18 meters).
