Final Stats

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team won the doubles point but came up just short in singles, falling 4-3 to No. 56 Virginia Tech on Friday in Blacksburg, Va.

The Deacons (6-12, 0-8 ACC) picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead for the first time in four matches, but this time singles let them down, as the Hokies (10-11, 2-6 ACC) came back to claim four singles matches to earn the win.

Emilee Malvehy and Martina Pavelec were the first to finish at No. 2 doubles, with a dominating 8-2 performance against Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher. Ryann Cutillo and Anna Mydlowska followed with the clinching 8-5 doubles win at No. 3 over Shannon Betts and Katie Blow.

Singles produced a number of close matches. The Deacons got their two wins at the middle spots. Kayla Duncan continued her strong play, defeating Betts 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4. The Winston-Salem native has now won four of her last five matches against ACC opponents.

At No. 3 singles, Malvehy rallied after dropping the first set to outlast Tea Ivanovic 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

No. 1 singles proved to be the critical match. Wake's No. 24 Pavelec lost the first set to Yasmin Hamza, but came back to take the second in dominating fashion 6-2. The final set was a battle, as the two players were even at 5-5 through the first 10 games, but Hamza would take the next two games to earn the deciding 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

The Deacs will continue their swing through the Commonwealth Sunday when they travel to take on Virginia.
