WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team was awarded ITA All-Academic Team honors by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and Demon Deacons Emilee Malvehy, Anna Mydlowska and Martina Pavelec were named ITA Scholar-Athletes as part of the 2011 ITA Academic Award Program.
To earn the ITA All-Academic Team Award, a squad must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above. ITA Scholar-Athlete honors are awarded to varsity letter-winners who have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year and who have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Malvehy graduated in May with a degree in communication and a minor in entrepreneurship and social enterprise. The Auburn, Calif. native shone as a senior in 2010-11, ranking second on the team with a 16-12 singles record and rising as high as No. 84 in the national singles rankings. She is currently interning with the ATP's Winston-Salem Open.
Pavelec also graduated in May with a degree in economics and communication. The Suttgart, Germany native has a history of academic success, having earned All-ACC Academic honors in each of the last two seasons. An All-ACC honoree in 2010 and 2011, Pavelec led the Demon Deacons at the No. 1 singles position, peaking at No. 24 in the national singles rankings and earning a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship.
Mydlowska played in all 22 of Wake Forest's dual matches this season, primarily at the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles positions. The rising senior boasts one of the highest GPAs on the team and is pursuing a degree in health and exercise science. She is spending part of her summer in Vietnam in a program designed to help disadvantaged youth with the opportunity to play sports as well as pursue educational opportunities.
The 2010-11 Demon Deacons are the eighth team to earn the ITA All-Academic Team award under head coach Jeff Wyshner. Wyshner just completed his first season as head coach at Wake Forest. He had previously coached ITA All-Academic teams at Manhattan (four times), Fairfield (two times) and Akron (one time).
