ICELAND - Wake Forest rising-sophomore Olafia Kristinsdottir ran away from the field at the 2011 Icelandic Women's Championship en route to a nine-shot victory. Kristinsdottir posted a 72-hole total of 8-over par.
The first two days of the event were played in relatively benign conditions, which made for good scoring. Kristinsdottir shot an even-par 72 in the opening round but trailed by three shots. Her second round of 2-under 70 then thrust her into the lead through 36 holes.
In the third round, the weather took a turn for the worse. Temperatures dropped, the wind picked up and the players played through patches of off-and-on rain. Kristinsdottir controlled her ball flight well and fired a round of 2-over 74. That was not only the best round of the day on the women's side by a large margin, it also bested all of the male competitors in the Men's National Championship.
Kristinsdottir had a staggering 13-shot lead heading into the final round, which was played on Sunday, July 24. The rain and high winds continued to batter the players as Kristinsdottir carded a closing round of 80 but still claimed a nine-shot victory.
The Reykjavík, Iceland native has had a tremendous 2011 thus far. She represented Iceland at the European Ladies Amateur Team Championship in Austria, where she shot rounds of 75-71 and also recorded one and a half points for the team during match play. She then returned home to play in the Reykjavik Club Championship. After rounds of 77-75 in tough windy conditions, Kristinsdottir pulled away for a six-shot victory with rounds of 72-73. The final round 73 included a hole-out for eagle from 110 yards.
Kristinsdottir played in every tournament for the Demon Deacons as a freshman last year and averaged 79.0 strokes per round. She had a season-best finish of tied for 28th at the Bryan National Collegiate in March and also fired a sensational round of 3-over 75 in windy conditions on the second day of the NCAA Championships.
