WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest head baseball coach Tom Walter has announced that incoming freshman Matt Martin will join the Demon Deacon baseball squad in the fall of 2011.
Martin is a right-handed hitting catcher who played his high school baseball at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., Martin was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 44th Round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
Wake Forest outfielder Mac Williamson was also selected by the Boston Red Sox in the same draft.
"We are excited to get a player of Matt's caliber this late in the year. He will step in and immediately compete to be our starting catcher," said Walter. "Catching is the one position where you can't be deep enough."
Martin is the ninth player set to join the Wake Forest baseball team in the fall of 2011, as Kevin Conway, Colin Egan, Will Finley, Aaron Fossas, Connor Kaden, Sam Kmiec, Joe Napolitano and Matt Pirro all committed earlier in the year.
