HANAHAN, S.C. - Wake Forest senior All-American Cheyenne Woods carded a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to lead the women's golf team in the final round of the Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Club. The Deacons finished the 54-hole event in 15th place.
Woods had a great start to the day, birdying three of her first six holes. She dropped a shot at her ninth hole and remained 2-under for the day with four holes to play. After a bogey at the par-5 ninth, the Phoenix, Ariz., native finished the tournament in style with a closing birdie to post a 2-under 70. It was her first under-par round of the year and her 31st career round at par or better.
For the weekend, Woods made a total of eight birdies and finished at 2-over par. That pitted her in a tie for 26th with three other golfers.
As a team, the Deacs finished 15th in the 22-team field at 40-over par. Wake looked to have a tremendous round going in the morning, as the team made 12 birdies in the first nine holes and was 7-under par midway through the day. But a few mistakes led to a couple of big numbers on the second nine and the Deacs would settle for a final round 297.
"We had a great start to the day but just made too many mistakes on the second nine," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "The good thing is that we know the potential is there. You can see the students gaining confidence. We had four players this week who were playing in their first DI event. They were a bit nervous and we made some mistakes that are typical of young players. I'm not worried about that though because they're getting better. This was just the first event of a long season."
Junior transfer Greta Lange opened the tournament with a 78 but rebounded to post a pair of solid rounds of 3-over 75. She made a total of five birdies over the final two days and finished tied for 72nd.
Sophomore Olafia Kristinsdottir had an up-and-down final round on Tuesday. She made a career-best six birdies on the day but also made six bogies and just five pars. After the dust settled, she would card a 2-over 74 and finished tied for 77th.
Freshman Marissa Dodd and Allison Emrey each finished their first collegiate events with 6-over 78s. Dodd ended the week tied for 83rd and Emrey was tied for 89th.
LSU came into the final round in third place but fired the round of the tournament to runaway with the team title. The Tigers carded an 11-under 277 and finished the event at 16-under par. North Carolina finished in second place at 11-under while Florida came in third at 8-under.
Defending NCAA champion Austin Ernst fired a 5-under 67 and overtook 36-hole leader Erica Popson for medalist honors. Ernst was 13-under for three rounds, which was four shots better than Popson.
Next up for the Deacons will be the Windy City Classic at the Glen View Club in Chicago, Ill. That event is scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 3 and conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
