CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior Garret Drogosch finished tenth overall in the men's 8k race and sophomore Nicole Irving finished second in the women's 5k race to lead the Wake Forest cross country teams Friday afternoon at the Charlotte Invitational at McAlpine Park.
Both the Demon Deacon men's and women's squad finished third overall, as the men totaled 101 points and the women finished with 149 points. Virginia Tech finished first on both sides, with the women totaling 84 points and the Hokie men finishing with 35 points.
Drogosch's time of 24:41.6 was his second-best 8k time of the season, and he was only 33 seconds behind the first-place finisher, Liberty's Zac Edwards (24:08.7).
Senior Paul Loeser turned in a strong race, finishing 14th overall in a season-best time of 24:50.6. Two more Deacs finished in the top 30, as sophomore Alex Rose turned in a time of 25:01.4 to place 20th, and junior Tom Finneran finished 29th in 25:12.6.
A trio of juniors finished next in line for Wake Forest, with Anthony Marois in 40th (25:25.5), Jake Graham in 49th (25:44.4), and Nate Guthals in 53rd (25:55.0).
Also racing on Friday for the men's squad was a pack of freshmen that included Connor Crowley, Brian O'Toole, Jacob Dearmon, and Daniel Segall.
On the women's side, Irving continued to dominate just as she has done in every race this season. The Ballston Lake, N.Y. native finished second overall in a personal-best 5k time of 16:54.9. It marks the first time in Irving's career that she has broken the 17-minute mark, as she shattered her previous personal-best time of 17:11.8, set at last year's Charlotte Invitational.
Irving finished just one second behind USC Upstate's Joan Tangwar, who won the 5k race in 16:53.7.
Fellow sophomore Melanie Powers was the second Deacon to cross the finish line, placing 25th overall in a time of 17:52.9. Powers broke the 18-minute mark for the first time in her career, surpassing her previous collegiate personal-best time of 18:02.13 set at last year's Covered Bridge Open.
Junior Allison Homer finished third among Wake Forest runners and 45th overall in a time of 18:21.5, and freshman Aubrey Waggoner followed close behind in 47th place with a collegiate personal-best 5k time of 18:23.2.
Casey Fowler finished 56th overall (18:30.2), and graduate student Caitlin Crawford finished 57th overall, competing as an unattached runner.
Rounding out the scoring totals for the Deacons were freshmen Kaitlyn Oliver in 83rd place (18:54.0) and sophomore Lindsay Kerr (21:31.1).
The Deacs will take next weekend off before returning to racing action Oct. 14 for the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C.
