WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior C.J. Harris scored 10 points and Ty Walker pulled down seven rebound to go along with three blocks as the Wake Forest men's basketball team fell 76-40 to in-state rival N.C. State on Saturday afternoon at the Joel Coliseum.
Both teams entered the game coming off their first conference losses of the season, and with the win the Wolfpack improve to 13-5 overall (2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), while the Deacs drop to 10-7 (1-2 ACC).
Four starters reached double figures for the Wolfpack, led by Lorenzo Brown's 20 points on 8-14 shooting from the field. C.J. Williams scored 15 points, while Richard Howell picked up a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Junior Scott Wood also scored 12 points, including two three-pointers.
N.C. State shot 45 percent from the floor, including 38 percent from long range. The Wolfpack collected 26 points off 17 Demon Deacon turnovers, in addition to scoring 22 fastbreak points.
The Deacs shot only 30 percent from the floor (16-55) and attempted just eight free throws the entire game, converting on six of them. The Wake Forest bench outscored the Pack 15-10.
N.C. State's fifth starter, DeShawn Painter, tied for the game-high in rebounds with 12.
The Wolfpack opened the game quickly on the offensive end, scoring five points in the first minute off a pair of free throws from Howell and a three-pointer from Wood.
The Deacs were held scoreless for the first three minutes of play until sophomore point guard Tony Chennault found Walker for a dunk at the 16:55 mark. On the next play, Nikita Mescheriakov delivered a perfect bounce pass to Harris on a backdoor cut to pull the Deacs back within one at 5-4.
The Wolfpack then went on a 14-6 run, including a pair of threes from Williams and Wood, forcing Wake Forest to call a timeout just under the 12-minute mark. Neither team scored a bucket over the next four minutes, as the score remained at 19-10 due to a number of turnovers by both sides.
A goaltending call against N.C. State's C.J. Leslie brought the Deacs back to within seven at 21-14, but the Wolfpack went on to close the half on a 12-3 run, including six points from Brown during the stretch.
Coming out in the second half down 33-17, the Deacs struggled to find an offensive rhythm, managing just six points in the first eight minutes of the half. A pair of three-pointers from Brown and one by Alex Johnson fueled a 19-6 run for the Wolfpack
Mescheriakov fouled out with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game, forcing the Deacs to bring in reserve center Carson Desrosiers. He would contribute two points, four boards, and a pair of blocks in 18 minutes of play.
N.C. State's offense continued to roll for the remainder of the game, scoring 24 points over the final 11 minutes of the second half.
The Deacs will return to the court Thursday evening when they travel to Durham to take on Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
