JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Wake Forest senior Evan Beck fired a second round 69 and is in second place heading into the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Beck made a couple of birdies on the opening nine and made the turn at 1-under par. He then notched back-to-back birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 and came home with a 3-under 69. That has him at 5-under for the tournament and five shots behind Grant Milner of Memphis.
Beck is 5-under par on the back nine alone through two rounds. In his last three competitive rounds, the Virginia Beach, Va., native is a combined 11-under par.
As a team, the Demon Deacons climbed to as high as second place midway through the back nine on Saturday but a tough finish left the team in seventh place. The Deacs played the final two holes as a team at 8-over par. Wake finished with a second round 290 and is 1-under par through two rounds.
Junior John Varol was one of those who stumbled a bit getting to the house. After his fifth birdie of the round, Varol was 4-under par through 13 holes but played the final five holes at 5-over to post his second-straight round of even-par 72. Varol is tied for 16th heading into Sunday.
Like Varol, freshman Davis Womble had five birdies on Saturday but he also had a double-bogey at No. 10 and a triple-bogey on No. 17. Womble finished the day at 1-over 73 and is 1-over for the tournament.
Senior Charlie Harrison was also done-in by the big numbers as he had a double-bogey and a triple-bogey in his round of 4-over 76. Coupled with his opening round of 1-under 71, Harrison is in a tie for 38th at 3-over par. Junior Thomas Birdsey is one shot behind Harrison at 4-over after carding a second round 76.
Freshman Grayson Murray, who is playing as an individual, had an up-and-down round on Saturday. He made a quadruple-bogey eight on the par-4 sixth and eventually slipped to 5-over for the day after a bogey at No. 8. But he birdied No. 9 and then made four more birdies coming to home to fight his way back to even-par for round. His 72 on Saturday followed a 70 on Friday and the Raleigh, N.C. native is tied for 11th at 2-under par with a round to play.
Junior Beau Cutts is also playing as an individual and he carded a 4-over 76 on Saturday. Cutts is 7-over for the tournament and tied for 59th.
First round leader Tennessee continues to hold the lead after a second round 287. The Vols are 9-under par and have a three-shot lead over Virginia.
