Beck Finishes Runner-Up At Bank Of Tennessee

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Wake Forest senior All-American Evan Beck fired his fourth-straight under-par round and finished the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate runner-up at 8-under par.
Beck carded his second-straight round of 3-under 69 and finished two shots behind Memphis' Grant Milner. For the weekend, Beck a total of 12 birdies, four in each round, compared to just four bogeys. The runner-up finish was the second of his career as he also finished runner-up to teammate Lee Bedford at the 2010 Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic.
"Evan had a good week, I'm happy for him," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "He played pretty solid and hit the ball well. I think he would tell you he got away with a couple of shots here and there but he's more accepting of that now and I think that helps. He's learning that he doesn't have to be perfect with every shot to score well. Overall, it was a good week for him."
As a team, the Demon Deacons carded a round of 1-under 287 on Sunday and finished in a tie for sixth with Coastal Carolina at 2-under par.
"It was a little disappointing because we were only five shots back but finished sixth," Haas said. "That just shows you that every shot counts no matter what round it is. One shot each day and we're right there."
Playing as an individual, freshman Grayson Murray posted his first career top-10 after shooting rounds of 70-72-71. Murray made 15 birdies in the 54-holes and finished tied for seventh at 3-under par.
Fellow freshman Davis Womble had another very good tournament, finishing tied for 15th at even-par 216. Womble shook off an opening bogey on Sunday and made a total of three birdies the rest of the round for a 1-under 71. That was the second under-par round of his career.
After starting the tournament with back-to-back even par rounds, junior John Varol finished with a 4-over 76 on Sunday. He finished the weekend with a total of 10 birdies and he was tied for 37th at 4-over par.
Senior Charlie Harrison and junior Thomas Birdsey each finished the tournament in a tie for 42nd at 5-over par. Harrison made three birdies and carded a 2-over 74 on Sunday while Birdsey made 15 pars and one birdie in his final round of 1-over 73.
Junior Beau Cutts, who also played as an individual, finished-off the weekend with his lowest of the tournament, a 1-over 73. Cutts finished tied for 56th at 8-over par.
In the team race, Tennessee held the lead through the first and second rounds and had the lead for the majority of the final round. But a shaky finish for the Vols allowed Missouri to come back and claim a one-shot victory. Missouri shot a 2-under 286 and finished at 7-under par.
The Demon Deacons will finish the fall portion of their schedule next weekend at the prestigious US Collegiate Championship. The 54-hole event starts Friday, Oct. 19 at the Golf Club of Georgia.
