LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Conor Keniry put together his second consecutive solid day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three doubles, but Wake Forest dropped the series finale to New Mexico State 13-9 on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.
The Demon Deacons end their opening series with a 1-3 record, while the Aggies are off to a good start at 3-1.
Wake Forest touched up NMSU starter Michael Ormseth for 12 hits and nine runs (six earned), but the Aggie pitcher earned the victory in his first start. Scott Coffman then pitched the final three innings of the game to earn his first save of the season.
Jack Fischer made his first career start for the Demon Deacons, but he only lasted 2.1 innings and gave up seven runs in the losing effort.
Keniry's sensational day at the plate added to his four hits yesterday, as he went 3-for-6 in Game 1 of the doubleheader and 1-for-4 in Game 2. He also scored three times and drove in two runs.
Pat Blair and Charlie Morgan also had good days at the plate with three hits apiece. Blair was 3-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and a double, while Morgan was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a double.
Through the weekend, Morgan has a team-best .529 average, and Keniry is just behind him at .500.
James Harris also put together a multi-hit day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.
Wake Forest struck first when the Deacs scored two runs in their first at bat. Blair reached on an error to start the game, and Keniry smacked his first double of the contest to left field to score the Deacon leadoff man. Three batters later, Keniry would come around to score from third base after another error off the bat of Morgan.
The Aggies answered immediately and took a two-run lead of their own with four in the bottom half of the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, Keniry again helped start the rally in the top of the third. He led off the inning with another double and would come around to score when Mac Williamson singled into left field in the team's next at bat.
Two batters later, Morgan singled and put runners on the corners when Williamson advanced to third. With Joe Napolitano at the plate, Williamson scored on a balk, and Morgan advanced to second. Harris then singled to center field to bring home Morgan and cap off the three-run inning for Wake Forest, giving the Deacs a 5-4 lead.
NMSU again quickly had the answer and scored five more in the bottom of the third, and the Aggies never relinquished the lead. They also added one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Wake Forest tried to battle back by scoring two in the fourth and two in the fifth, but it was not enough. Williamson and Carlos Lopez each had an RBI off a fielder's choice in the fourth, while Blair had an RBI-single and Keniry had an RBI-double to help the Deacs score a pair in the fifth.
John McLeod and Nate Jones combined to pitch the final 2.2 innings for Wake Forest, allowing just one hit and one walk. Neither pitcher allowed a run.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action on Wednesday for their home opener. Wake Forest will host High Point at 4 p.m. at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
