WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest got big games from C.J. Harris and Travis McKie, rolling to its biggest win in the Jeff Bzdelik era with an 85-56 victory against ACC rival Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Harris poured in 23 on an efficient 10 of 16 shooting and McKie added 21 points to go with six rebounds as Wake Forest beat BC for the fifth time in its past seven meetings and earned a season sweep of the Eagles.
Sophomore center Carson Desrosiers also chipped in with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, tying a career-high in scoring and hitting a career best three three-pointers on just four attempts. Senior Ty Walker finished the afternoon with two blocks, leaving the seven-foot center just one denial short of Josh Howard (143 career blocks) for fifth on the school's all-time list.
WFU improves to 13-15 overall with the win and now holds a 4-10 mark in ACC play. BC dropped to 8-20 on the year and 3-11 in the conference.
The margin was the largest win for WFU in the Bzdelik era, surpassing a an 81-59 win over Marist on November 23, 2010. It was also the biggest all-time win for Wake against the Eagles, overtaking a 20-point decision on January 14, 2009. Additionally, it was the most points in an ACC game for the Deacons since Feb. 9, 2010.
Wake Forest opened up the scoring on a three-pointer by McKie from the right corner and grabbed a 5-0 lead early, holding Boston College off the scoreboard until three minutes into the game.
Back-to-back buckets by the Eagles evened things up, however, as Boston College used a 12-3 run over 3:52 to pull in front by four.
Harris put a halt to the BC run with a triple at the 12:50 mark and Wake held within one before another bucket by Harris and a three by Carson Desrosiers made it 18-14 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Wake pushed its lead to seven on a drive-and-dish from Mescheriakov to a wide open Walker, whose lay-in made it a 28-21 Deacon lead with 5:04 remaining.
Harris continued to do it all, robbing BC's Jordan Daniels just over a minute later and taking off for an emphatic breakaway left-handed slam with 3:51 to go.
The Deacs would then push their lead to a half-high 11 after Fischer made it a nine point advantage on a pump-fake three from the left wing and another BC turnover led to a alley-oop from Tony Chennault to McKie, bringing the Joel crowd to its feet.
Moments later, Harris made it an 11-point lead with a mid-range jumper and the Deacons would roll into the locker room with a nine point lead, 38-29.
Wake Forest opened the second half on a 9-2 run over the first 3:23, capped by a corner three by Harris.
The Deacons stretched their lead to 19 on Desrosiers' third three-pointer of the game with 13:10 to play and jump-started another run three minutes later with eight straight points, including five-in-a-row from McKie, to push their advantage all the way to 24.
With 1:35 to play, Wake went up by a game-high 32 - the largest lead of the Jeff Bzdelik era at Wake Forest - on a layup by Daniel Green.
With 2:13 to go, walk-on Ryan Keenan nailed a three-pointer for his first points of the season and freshman walk-on Doug Niedrich checked in for his first career appearance with 1:06 to play.
Next up for the Deacs will be a matchup with No.5-ranked Duke for Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 9 p.m. Wake Forest will be looking for revenge after losing 91-73 in Durham on January 19.
