WILMINGTON, N.C. - Wake Forest senior All-American Lee Bedford fired a pair of under-par rounds on Sunday to pace the men's golf team on the opening day of the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Landfall Country Club.

Bedford, who won the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate last week, is tied for second after rounds of 70-71 (-3). As a team, the Demon Deacons are in second place behind East Carolina.

"We had a pretty solid day today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We dropped a few shots right at the end so we're leaving the course a little frustrate but overall, it wasn't bad. ECU played a really good round in the afternoon and they deserve to be in front. We're within striking distance though so we need to put up a good score tomorrow and see what happens."

For Bedford, the pair of under-par rounds give him five-straight to open the spring. That is the longest stretch of under-par rounds in his career.

Sophomore Thomas Birdsey and freshman Cyrus Stewart are both tied for seventh at 1-under par through 36 holes. Birdsey followed an opening 73 with a 2-under 70 while Stewart, who is playing as an individual this week, carded rounds of 71-72.

Junior Charlie Harrison, who finished tied for fourth in this event last season, shot rounds of 74-75 and is tied for 19th. Fellow junior Evan Beck posted scored of 75-76 and is tied for 28th while John Varol is tied for 41st after rounds of 78-77.

East Carolina started the day with a round of 8-over 296 but rebounded with a 6-under 282 and leads the tournament at 2-over par. The Demon Deacons are in second place at 8-over after posting matching rounds of 292. Chattanooga is in third, four shots behind the Deacs.

Individually, Wesley Bryan shot rounds of 68-71 and is 5-under par. He holds a two-shot lead over Bedford and Richard Fountain of Davidson, who are both 3-under par.

Wake Forest will be in the final grouping off the first tee Monday morning and is paired with ECU and Chattanooga. The first tee time for group is 9:45 a.m.
