GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior left-handed pitcher Tim Cooney has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 20-26, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Cooney earned the award after helping Wake Forest defeat Cincinnati 7-0 on Saturday of the Wake Forest Invitational presented by Hilton Garden Inn Winston-Salem/Hanes Mall, allowing the Deacs to earn their first shutout of the season.
The Collegeville, Pa., native struck out 10 batters and gave up just three hits through seven innings, as he improved his record to 1-1. Sophomore Nate Jones then retired all six batters he faced to preserve the shutout.
On the year, Cooney is ranked second in the ACC with 21 strikeouts and is tied for fourth in innings pitched (12.2). In addition, his 1.42 ERA is the 18th best in the league.
"We are really proud of Tim. He has worked extremely hard to become one of the premier pitchers in the conference and in the nation," said Wake Forest head baseball coach Tom Walter. "This couldn't happen to a more deserving young man."
Cooney has now earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors twice in his career, as he shared the award with NC State's Cory Mazzoni on March 28 of last season. Last year, he earned the award after helping Wake Forest shut out Florida State 8-0 in Tallahassee.
Wake Forest will remain at home this week, as UNC Asheville comes to town on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Eastern Michigan and Marshall will then play the Deacs two times apiece over the weekend.
