MORGANTOWN, W.V. - Brian Holmes has been named National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the period ending March 6. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
To this point, Holmes has also been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week by the conference office.
Holmes was spectacular on Sunday night in running his season record to 3-0, as the junior lefty hurled Wake Forest's first no-hitter since Ben Clayton performed the feat against UNC Greensboro on March 27, 2000. In the effort, he also struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one walk.
Marshall was able to score in the sixth on two hit batters, a walk and a sacrifice fly, but Holmes allowed just one other base runner in the other eight innings of work. The complete game was the first of his career.
Holmes started strong by retiring 16 of the first 17 batters he faced, and after the sixth, he retired all nine batters he faced.
Wake Forest will take on Valparaiso today at 4 p.m. in Game 1 of a two-game series with the Crusaders.
