Field Athletes Lead Deacs at Coastal Carolina Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A handful of field athletes led Wake Forest Friday evening on the opening day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The meet, which was the first of the outdoor season for the Demon Deacs, featured a number of debut performances by Wake Forest throwers, particularly freshmen Patrick Donelan (javelin throw) and K.C. Barrett (hammer throw).
Donelan finished seventh overall in the javelin with a mark of 173-9 (52.97 meters), while the Deacs were led by senior Trey Blanton in the event, as he finished second with a throw of 186-9 (56.93 m).
Senior multi-event athlete Alex Hill also competed in the javelin, finishing 10th with a throw of 165-0 (50.3 m).
In the hammer throw, the Deacs were led by sophomore Nate Wooten with a mark of 150-7, good for 14th place overall. Barrett finished close behind in 17th place with a throw of 144-11.
Sophomore Michael Mastanduno also made his first appearance of the season for the Deacs, finishing in a three-way tie for second place in the long jump with a mark of 22-1 (45.89 m).
On the women's side, senior Sarah Brobeck led three Deacons in the javelin throw, finishing fifth with a throw of 128-3 (39.09 m). Multi-event athletes Erika Martin and Julie McCauley also competed in the event, finishing with marks of 100-5 and 81-7, respectively.
Both Martin and McCauley competed in the long jump for Wake Forest, as McCauley finished 11th with a jump of 16-5.25 (5.57 m), and Martin finished in 13th by jumping a distance of 15-11.5 (4.86).
The Deacs return to action tomorrow on Day Two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational, as competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's discus throw. Live results from tomorrow's events will be available at timinginc.com.
