Deacs to Face Fifth-Seeded Virginia in ACC Championship

The 12th-seeded Wake Forest women's tennis team (3-17) will begin the 2012 ACC Championship on Thursday when it takes on fifth-seeded Virginia (16-6) in the first round at 9 a.m. at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The winner of that match will take on fourth-seeded Clemson on Friday at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

Deacons in the ACC Tournament
Wake Forest holds a 34-26 (.567) all-time record in ACC Championship play, the third-best mark of any conference team. The Demon Deacons Deacons have a winning or even record against every ACC team other than Duke and Miami. The Deacs have faced every team except Boston College in the tournament. Wake Forest has won its first match of the tournament on all but four occasions (1993, 2004, 2008 and 2011).
Wake Forest is 4-1 all-time against its first-round opponent Virginia in ACC Tournament play. The Demon Deacons and Cavaliers last faced off in the quarterfinals of the 2002 tournament with the Deacs posting a 4-0 win.
Wake Forest in the Rankings
Senior Kayla Duncan has headlined the Wake Forest singles players this season and heads into the ACC Championship ranked No. 69 nationally. Duncan has posted five wins over ranked opponents this season, including the best victory of her Wake Forest career over No. 20 Anna Bartenstein of Miami.
Duncan is also ranked No. 65 in doubles with Kathryn Talbert, though Talbert has been sidelined for the last five weeks with an injury and will miss the tournament. Duncan and Talbert will end their time as doubles partners as the ninth-winningest team in school history with a 30-12 record together.
Tough Luck Deacs
Wake Forest has been the victim of a string of injuries this season that have forced it to compete with a shorthanded lineup in nine of its 20 dual matches. The Deacons have forfeited 19 singles and doubles matches this year due to not having enough healthy players.
The Demon Deacons have also come up on the wrong side of a 4-3 scoreline in six matches this season, their most one-point losses since 2003 when they dropped 10 4-3 decisions.
Regular Season vs. Virginia
Wake Forest fell 6-1 to Virginia at home on April 1 in the two teams' only meeting the season. Rebecca Siegler picked up the Demon Deacons' lone point at the No. 3 singles position when her opponent, Erin Vierra, retired after falling behind 3-1 in the first set. Kayla Duncan split sets with Lindsey Hardenbergh at No. 1, but fell 10-7 in a 10-point tiebreak that was played in lieu of a third set.
