CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Daniel Harrison posted the best performance of his young career in the finals of the 400m dash on Saturday at the University of Virginia's Lannigan Field during the final day of the 2012 ACC Outdoor Championships.
Competing just over 100 miles from his hometown of Newport News, Va., Harrison placed fifth overall in the finals of his signature event. Despite just setting a new personal-best of 48.06 during the preliminary heats on Friday evening, he improved his time even further and became the first Demon Deacon to run the 400m dash in under 48 seconds since Tyler Dodds and Jon Reid in 2010, finishing with a time of 47.75.
Sophomore Alexander Rose also put together a strong performance in the 5,000m run en route to shattering his personal-best time in the event by more than 10 seconds. The Brisbane, Australia, native took eighth place overall after crossing the line in 14:28.44.
The men's team finished ninth overall in the ACC standings with a total of 28 points. Virginia Tech, which held a commanding lead heading into Saturday's action, kept Florida State at bay in the closing events to win the first conference championship in school history with 153.5 points to FSU's 149.
The Deacs are currently scheduled to be back in action beginning next Friday at the Highlander Invitational in Radford, Va., at the Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.
Following is an event-by-event recap of Wake Forest's action from the final day of the 2012 ACC Outdoor Championships.
400m Dash (Finals)
Daniel Harrison broke his personal-best time in the event for the second time in as many days and finished fifth overall in 47.75, the first time that a Deacon has completed the 400m dash in under 48 seconds since 2010.
5,000m Run
Alexander Rose led the trio of Deacs in the event by taking eighth place in a personal-best time of 14:28.44. Garret Drogosch (14:49.80) and Tom Finneran (14:59.51) were not far behind, however, and placed 15th and 19th, respectively.
4x400m Relay
Daniel Harrison, Michael McEnany, Kyle Eager and Malcolm Nunley teamed up for the first time and posted the best time by any Wake Forest combination in the event this season. The quartet powered their way to an eighth-place finish in a time of 3:15.85, nearly five seconds faster than any other Deacon squad in 2012.
Discus Throw
Michael and Nate Wooten paired up in one of their signature throws events and each earned solid finishes. Michael placed 10th overall with a toss of 154-2 (47.00m) while Nate's throw of 131-8 (40.14m) garnered an 18th-place finish.
