ATLANTA - Wake Forest freshman Nyki Caldwell cleared a career-high mark of 5-7.25 (1.71 meters) in the high jump on Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Invitational to finish in a five-way tie for fourth place.
The meet served as the second of three last-chance NCAA First Round East Regional qualifiers that the Demon Deacons will take part in this weekend. The top 48 declared athletes in each region per event qualify for the NCAA First Round Meets, which will take place May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 athletes from each region then advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, from June 6-9.
With the impressive performance, Caldwell now moves into second place on Wake Forest's all-time charts, surpassing her previous top jump of 5-5 (1.65 meters). Trina Bindel holds the high jump school record of 5-11.5 (1.82 meters), set in 1996.
Also competing for the Deacs on Saturday afternoon was Montasia Golden in the triple jump, as she placed 20th overall with a mark of 38-0 (11.58 meters) in the event. The freshman currently ranks second in school history in the event with her top jump of 40-11.75 (12.49 meters), which came earlier this season at the ACC Championship.
Freshman sprinter Daniel Harrison rounded out competition for the Deacs on Saturday, racing to a time of 48.72 to finish 38th in the 400 meters. Harrison's personal-best time of 47.75 also came at the ACC Championship, where he finished fifth overall in the 400 and moved into 10th place all-time on the Wake Forest charts.
The Deacs wrap up competition in last-chance regional qualifiers on Sunday evening when a select number of student-athletes compete in the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier in Raleigh, NC. A complete recap will be posted later this evening following the conclusion of the meet.
