Men's Golf NCAA Championship Bid Ends At The Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team came into the final round of the NCAA Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Club with a chance to advance to the finals, but a final round 302 left the Deacs in 11th place and ended their run.
Wake Forest was just three shots out of the fifth and final qualifying spot entering the day. A tough start got the Deacons off on the wrong foot and they never really got on track. Wake posted a final round 302 and finished in 11th place at 28-over par.
Junior Evan Beck had struggled a bit this spring but played a very nice tournament this weekend. He was even-par through 36 holes and got off to a solid start on Saturday. He countered a double-bogey at his third hole of the day with a pair of birdies and remained even-par through 13 holes. However, three bogeys down the stretch left him with a final round 74. Beck finished in a tie for 18th at 3-over par.
Senior Lee Bedford completed his final round as a Demon Deacon on Saturday. Like Beck, Bedford had navigated the first 36 holes at even par but Saturday was not his day. He posted a final round 6-over 77 and finished in a tie for 29th.
Despite the finish today, Bedford had a stellar career for the Demon Deacons. He won four events and finished with a scoring average of 72.86, which is the sixth-best mark since 1980.
Junior Charlie Harrison had a couple of birdies in his final round of 4-over 75. Harrison finished a shot behind Bedford at 8-over for the tournament and in a tie for 45th.
Sophomore Thomas Birdsey made three birdies on Saturday, including one at his final hole, to post a 5-over 76. Birdsey finished the event in a tie for 56th at 11-over par.
Freshman Cyrus Stewart, who played well this spring, had a tough weekend and finished with an 85 on Saturday.
Behind the top-three finishers in the field, top-seeded Alabama ran away with the team title at 24-under par. That was 25-shots better than East Carolina which finished second at 1-over par. North Florida was third, host Georgia was fourth and Iowa grabbed the final qualifying spot. The Hawkeyes shot a 1-over 285 to comeback and nip New Mexico by one shot.
Alabama's Justin Thomas claimed medalist honors at 9-under par. He was one shot better than his teammate Bobby Wyatt who finished at 8-over.
