WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore pitcher Jack Fischer has been named the Primetime Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball 360, as announced by the website on Tuesday.
Fischer is now the second Deacon pitcher to earn the recognition this season, as Michael Dimock was named to the Primetime Performer Honor Roll on March 13.
The Demon Deacon righty turned in maybe the most important performance of the season up to this point on Friday when he went 7.2 innings and led Wake Forest past Clemson 2-1. The win clinched a spot for the Deacs in the 2012 ACC Baseball Championship and doubled as head coach Tom Walter's 500th-career win.
During his outing, Fischer dominated the Tiger lineup by keeping them off the board and giving up just four hits and striking out three.
After allowing two men on base in the top of the first inning, Fischer got out of the jam with a fly ball to end the inning, and that out kick started a stretch where he retired 18 consecutive Clemson batters. The Tigers then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth, but Fischer responded with a strikeout before handing the ball over to Dimock, who got the Deacs out of the inning with a strikeout of his own.
Fischer has now made four starts of the year, including three in a row, and has posted a 2.77 ERA and a 4-4 record. Opponents are hitting just .234 against Fischer in 55.1 innings of work.
Fischer is scheduled to make the start on Thursday against NC State in Wake Forest's second game of the 2012 ACC Baseball Championship.
