GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 7-seeded Wake Forest baseball team will begin the 2012 ACC Baseball Championship by facing No. 2-seeded North Carolina on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park.
The game will be televised on Fox Sports South and will be streamed live on ESPN3, as Mike Hogewood and Nick Belmonte will have the call. Audio play-by-play can also be heard on 98.1 WBRF and online at WakeForestSports.com.
North Carolina earned the two-seed in the tournament by finishing the regular season with a 42-13 overall record and a 22-8 record in the ACC. The Demon Deacons come into the tournament with a 32-22 overall record and a 13-17 record in conference play.
One of the Tar Heels' conference losses came at the hands of Wake Forest in the series opener in Chapel Hill on March 30. The Demon Deacons outlasted North Carolina in that game 7-6 in 12 innings. Mark Rhine delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th, while Jack Fischer pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning to secure his first-career save.
North Carolina was able to rebound and take the next two games of the series, 7-3 and 4-3. Brett Armour scored the tying run in the top of the 9th of the series finale after recording a two-out double and touching home plate on an error, but the Heels answered with a walk-off base hit by Parks Jordan.
Rhine had a solid showing at the plate in the regular season series, going 5-for-10 with a double and two RBIs, while Armour went 4-for-12 with a double and three runs scored. Charlie Morgan and Mac Williamson both homered in the series as well.
On the mound for the Demon Deacons will be left-hander Tim Cooney. He comes into the game with a 6-6 record and a 3.65 ERA. His counterpart will be RHP Shane Taylor, who is a perfect 5-0 on the year with a 3.09 ERA.
Tonight's game will be the first time that Wake Forest has played an ACC Baseball Championship game in Greensboro, but the Demon Deacons are 19-24 when the tournament is played in the state of North Carolina.
Wake Forest has played North Carolina 18 times in this event, posting a 7-11 all-time record.
The Deacs will also be looking for their fifth ACC Championship title, as the first four came in 1977, 1998, 1999 and 2001.
