Lincoln Finishes 14th in Javelin at U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - Wake Forest junior Ben Lincoln's record-setting season came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 14th-place javelin finish in the U.S. Olympic Trials at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Lincoln recorded fouls on his first two attempts before throwing for a distance of 233-3 (71.10 meters) on his third and final attempt to finish in 14th place. "Ben placing 14th at the United States Olympic Trials was a great way to end his junior year," said assistant coach Zeb Sion. "I am very proud of him and am happy our first year working together ended on a such a high note."
Lincoln narrowly missed qualifying for the finals, as 12th-place finisher Benjamin Woodruff of Long Beach State was the last participant to qualify with a throw of 235-2 (71.69 meters). Illinois State's Timothy Glover finished first overall with a mark of 263-4 (80.27 meters).
Lincoln was one of just nine collegiate athletes competing in the javelin at the Trials, and one of just two throwers from the Atlantic Coast Conference to make the event. The Hingham, Mass., native earned All-ACC honors in the javelin for the third straight season, and he advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. He also broke his own school record in the event with a throw of 240-3 (73.23 meters) at the ACC Championship in April.
Lincoln placed 18th overall at the NCAA Championships earlier in June, and he became the first thrower from Wake Forest to compete in the Olympic Trials while currently in school since Andy Bloom finished fourth in the discus in 1996.
Volunteer assistant coach Chris Helwick also competed in the Olympic Trials on Friday and Saturday, finishing fifth overall in the decathlon with a total of 7,744 points.
On Friday afternoon, Helwick finished 18th in the 100 meter dash (11.49), 14th in the long jump (22-3 / 6.78 meters), fourth in the shot put (46-9 / 14.25 meters), eighth in the high jump (6-4 / 1.93 meters), and 16th in the 400 meter dash (51.97).
On Saturday, Helwick claimed 14th place in the 110 meter hurdles (15.30), fifth in the discus (143-1 / 43.61 meters), fifth in the pole vault (16-0.75 / 4.90 meters), first overall in the javelin throw (224-3 / 68.37 meters), and fifth in the 1500 meter run (4:33.85).
24-year-old Ashton Eaton of Oregon TC Elite set a new world record in the decathlon with a total of 9,039 points, breaking the previous record of 9,026 points held by The Czech Republic's Roman Sebrle from 2001.
