Former Deac Brent LaRue Heads to London Olympics

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest track and field standout Brent LaRue was named to the 2012 London Olympic squad for Slovenia, making him one of the eight Demon Deacons to compete in this year's Olympic Games.
The Kernersville, N.C. native is slated to run the 400m hurdles in London under the Slovenian flag after moving to the European nation with his wife, former Wake tennis player Ana Jerman, who hails from Slovenia. LaRue was the ACC champion in the 400m hurdles in 2010 and set the school record with a time of 50.20.
"Stepping onto the track in a giant stadium with spectators from all around the world and representing an entire nation is going to be pretty special," said LaRue. "This is a very individual sport, except maybe for relays, so you rarely have opportunity to run for more than yourself. I'm excited to run for more than myself, and I hope I can make Slovenia proud."
LaRue earned All-America honors in 2009 in the indoor heptathlon while being named All-ACC a combined seven times in indoor and outdoor competition. He set the conference record in 2006 in the indoor heptathlon and was a member of the outdoor 4x400m relay team that won the ACC title later that spring. LaRue also holds the school record in the pole vault.
Round one of the 400m hurdles is set to begin August 3 at 6:15 a.m. ET in London's Olympic Stadium.
