WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Wake Forest pitcher Brian Holmes has been selected to the 2012 New York-Penn League National League All-Star Team, and rising junior pitcher Jack Fischer was named the Northwoods League Pitcher of the Year.

Holmes made national news on March 4 when he pitched his first-career no-hitter against Marshall, striking out a career-best 10 guys in the process.

The Lawrenceville, Ga., native nearly outdid himself with the Tri-City ValleyCats as he took a perfect game into the bottom of the last inning against the Hudson Valley Renegades on July 27. He ended up surrendering a single to lead off the seventh before retiring the final three batters to preserve the one-hit shutout.

For the ValleyCats, Holmes has started nine games and posted a 6-1 record en route to his all-star selection. He has also recorded a 2.33 ERA and has struck out 45 while just walking 13. In addition, opponents are hitting just .159 off the lefty for the season.

The All-Star Game will be held Tuesday, August 14 at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio, at 7:35 EST.

Fischer, who has spent the summer pitching for the Wisconsin Woodchucks, has put together a solid summer from start to finish. In his last three starts of the regular season, Fischer hurled 20 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run. That stretch dropped his ERA from 2.43 to a league-best 1.76.

Hailing from Hinsdale, Ill., Fischer has a 6-1 record in nine starts and struck out 61 batters while walking just 14 in 56.1 innings.

In his first year on the mound for the Demon Deacons in 2012, Fischer went 5-4 and posted a 2.84 ERA in 63.1 innings.

Fischer and the Woodchucks will host the La Crosse Loggers in Game 1 of the Northwoods League 2012 playoff on Monday night.
