TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Wake Forest gave No.14 Florida State a tough test on Friday night but came up short, eventually falling 3-1 (17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 19-25) in front of 1,115 fans at Tully Gym.
Kylie Hargreaves led the Demon Deacons with 12 kills while Anna Carley had 10 in the match. Kristin Grissom had three block assists to lead the team while Heather Kraft registered a team-high 14 digs.
The Seminoles took the first two sets while Wake Forest battled for a 25-22 win in the third before FSU won the fourth and final set.
Florida State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Wake Forest came back and evened the score at 5-5. After the Seminoles pulled ahead, the Demon Deacons came within one after a block from Kristin Grissom and Danae Rosendall made the score 17-16. FSU though, used a strong run to win the set 25-17.
The Deacs fell behind early in the second set, but threatened the Seminoles by cutting their lead to 12-10. Beck and Carley had two kills each, helping Wake Forest pull within two, but Florida State closed out the second frame by winning 25-16.
In set three, both teams played close, although Florida State inched ahead with a 13-10 lead. After a kill from Hargreaves tied the score at 14, an attack error from the Seminoles gave the Deacs their first lead of the set which they never relinquished.
Wake Forest kept Florida State at bay even though the home team came within one as the Demon Deacons led 22-21. Hargreaves registered a kill followed by a service ace from Heather Kraft, giving Wake Forest set point. FSU came back with a point to make the score 24-22, but Hargreaves buried a kill to give the Deacs a 25-22 set three victory.
Florida State got all they could handle in the fourth set as both teams were tied throughout the first part of the set. Both teams were tied at 11 but FSU kept the Deacs at bay and won the set 25-19 and the match 3-1. Rosendall had a service ace making the score 20-18 with the advantage for the home team, but the Deacs were unable to complete the comeback.
Olivera Medic had 12 kills for Florida State (11-2/3-1 ACC) while Ashley Neff had 10.
Wake Forest (6-9/0-3 ACC) plays Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN3 in an ACC showdown.
