CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior Nicole Irving finished second in the women's 6k race, while senior Garret Drogosch finished sixth in the men's 8k to power the Wake Forest cross country teams Friday evening at the Charlotte Invitational.
As one of the largest meets in the Southeast, the fourth annual invitational at McAlpine Park hosted over 40 collegiate programs.
The Demon Deacon men's squad finished second overall totaling 80 points, while the women finished eight with 206 points. For the men, Virginia Tech took first place with 31 points, while Clemson secured first place for the women with 83 points.
Leading the women, junior Nicole Irving turned in a time of 20:59.58 to take second place in the race and first overall for the Deacs. Competing in her second collegiate race, freshman Ashley Brubaker crossed the line at 22:46.22 for 42nd place followed by sophomore Aubrey Waggoner in the 49th-spot (22:53.76).
Freshman Meredith Kilburn ranked 58th after submitting a mark of 23:01.66, followed by fellow freshman Kathleen Darling in 72nd place (23:11.42). Junior Melanie Powers (23:42.96) and freshman Caitlin Krol (24:55.63) rounded out the Deacons with marks at the 102nd and 140th spot.
On the men's side, all of the Deacons finished in the top-50 and set new personal bests for the season. Powered by Drogosch, the Westlake Village, Calif. native finished first for the Deacs with a time of 24:31.69. Drogosch was followed closely by fellow senior Nate Guthals who crossed the line at 24:48.51 to secure ninth place.
The lone Deacon freshman Kent Garrett took 15th after turning in a time of 24:53.48, while senior Anthony Marois (25:13.08) finished 29th. Seniors Tom Finneran (25:22.69) and Jake Graham (25:38.40) placed 36th and 47th, respectively.
The Deacs will take next weekend off before returning to racing action on Oct. 12 when they travel to Boone, N.C. for the Blue Ride Open.
