Deacs Find Success on First Day of WFU Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Members of the Wake Forest men's tennis team reached three singles semifinals and three doubles quarterfinals on the first day of the WFU Fall Invite, held a the Wake Forest Tennis Complex Friday.
Newcomers Maksim Kan and Pedro Dumont led the way in the A Singles flights, each reaching the semis, while Sam Bloom, the top seed in the B1 Singles flight, also won two matches to book a spot in the semifinals.
Kan defeated Davidson's Ricky Saad and Liberty's Shea Thomas, both in straight sets, and Dumont posted straight-set victories over Juan Estenssoro of Iowa and Dan McCall of Duke. Bloom also notched straight-set singles wins, beating Liberty's Dillon Segur and Stetson's Chester Espie by identical 6-3, 7-5 margins.
In B Doubles, Kan partnered Aws Laaribi to blank Charlotte's Jordi Masalle Ferrer and Alex Weber 8-0 in first round action. In the same flight, Nolan Bauer and Nicky Kunz teamed up to take down Peter Pello / Dimitry Zyhmantovich of Norfolk State 8-5.
Jaya Billa and Nicholas Osterling posted a win in the C Doubles flight, defeating Jimmy Roueche and Nazhone Wilkins of UNCG 8-5.
All 10 Deacons competing in the tournament won at least one singles match Monday. In addition to the Kan's semifinal run in A1 Singles, Laaribi defeated Furman's Matt Browne 7-5, 6-4 and Anthony Delcore took down Laurynas Antropikas of Stetson 6-3, 6-3.
Jon Ho beat Norfolk State's Robin Riethmueller in an A2 Singles consolation match. In B1 Singles, Osterling (def. ECU's Frederic Lehfeldt) and Bauer (def. Iowa's Dom Patrick) won their first round matches before falling in the second round.
Billa posted a first-round win over Norfolk State's Daniel Grauel in B2 Singles, while Kunz beat South Carolina State's Jiri Stiburek in a consolation match.
