CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Sierra Sims fired an even-par 72 to lead the Demon Deacons in the opening round of the Ruth's Chris Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.
Sims made a pair of bogeys and was 2-over par through her first six holes. But she played the final 12 holes at 2-under par without a bogey to post a 72. She starts the second round in a tie for 16th.
Behind Sims, the Demon Deacons carded a round of 297 and are in a tie for ninth place in the 18-team field. Vanderbilt took the early lead at 3-under par, one shot ahead of Duke.
Allison Emrey and Olafia Kristinsdottir each opened with rounds of 1-over 73 and are tied for 22nd. Emrey made four birdies in her round, including a nice closing birdie at the par-4 18th. Kristinsdottir birdied back-to-back holes at Nos. 15 and 16. Those were two of her three birdies on the day.
Sophomore Mariana Sims and junior Marissa Dodd each made one birdie on Friday and finished with rounds of 79 and 80, respectively. Sims is tied for 79th and Dodd is tied for 84th.
Senior Michelle Hartenstein, playing as an individual this weekend, opened the tournament with a 12-over 84.
Vanderbilt's Antonia Scherer leads the individual race after an opening round 75.
