Kan Upsets No. 28 Hess-Olesen to Reach Singles Final

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - Wake Forest freshman Maksim Kan scored the biggest win of his young career Saturday, knocking off No. 28 Esben Hess-Olesen of North Carolina to reach the finals of his singles flight at the WFU Fall Invite.
Kan breezed through the first set against Hess-Olesen, who played the No. 1 spot for the Tar Heels last year, and then held off the North Carolina junior in the second set to close out a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
Kan is the first Wake Forest freshman to beat a Top 30 player in singles since Tripper Carleton in 2010. He will take on Duke's Josh Levine for the A2 Singles championship tomorrow.
Also reaching the finals of his singles flight was sophomore Sam Bloom, who took down Stuart DePaolo of North Carolina 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals of B1 Singles. His opponent in tomorrow's final will be Marc Collado Castells from Penn State.
In doubles action, Wake Forest's duo of Jaya Billa and Nicholas Osterling will play for the C Doubles title tomorrow after beating teams from Davidson and Furman Saturday, dropping only four games combined in both matches.
Doubles will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, with singles to follow.
