CARY, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team rolled through the first day of action at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Thursday with six Demon Deacons advancing to the third round at Cary Tennis Park.
Sixth-ranked Romain Bogaerts, the top seed in the 128-person singles draw, led the way with two straight-set victories and was joined in the final 32 by teammates Jon Ho, Pedro Dumont, Maksim Kan, Nicky Kunz and Aws Laaribi.
Bogaerts opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Winthrop's Juan Pablo Boada and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Furman's Juan Sheppard. Ho took down two Tobacco Road foes, cruising past North Carolina's James Cox 6-1, 6-2 before battling to a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Duke's Josh Levine.
Kan, a freshman, continued to impress, grinding out a three-set win over Charlotte's Jack Williams before notching a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Clemson's Austin Ansari, one of the top freshman in the ACC last year. He is currently riding a seven-match singles winning streak.
Dumont topped Wofford's Rob Galloway and USC Upstate's Ybon Haessig, both in straight sets, while Kunz defeated Joel Roberts of Presbyterian and Daniil Gerasimov of NC Central. Laaribi rounded out Wake Forest's representatives in the third round, beating Trevor Gotkowski of Wofford 6-1, 6-1 and Leo Christofides of Coastal Carolina 6-2, 6-1.
No. 86 Adam Lee, Sam Bloom and Jaya Billa all won their first round matches before falling in the second round.
With the field whittled down to 32, some challenging matchups await the Demon Deacons in Friday's third round. Laaribi will take on the No. 2 seed, No. 14 Tvestan Mihov of South Carolina, while Kan will put his winning streak on the line against No. 22 Michael Redlicki of Duke, the third seed in the draw.
Kunz will battle the fourth seed, No. 33 Rafael Aita of UNCW, and Bogaerts will play South Carolina's Thiago Pinheiro. Ho and Dumont will face off against each other, guaranteeing Wake Forest at least one spot in the Round of 16.
Doubles action also starts tomorrow with the Deacons having five teams entered in the draw.
