WILMINGTON, N.C. - Wake Forest got off to a hot start on a cool breezy morning at the Landfall Tradition and finished the day in a tie for sixth after an opening round 306.
The Demon Deacons stayed strong in tough conditions and are right in the mix in the 18-team field. Alabama carded a sensational round of 3-under 285 and leads Duke by 10 shots. The next seven teams are all bunched within seven shots.
"The weather was not great this morning but I thought the students kept their composure and finished well," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "The wind was brutal today. It not only blew hard but it was cold. No one likes to look up and see the ball going somewhere they didn't expect. But I don't think students were fazed and that kept us in there. We're first off again tomorrow so we know what we have to deal with."
Junior Allison Emrey started the day with two birdies in the first three holes and finished the day with a pair of birdies in the final four holes to post an opening round 74. She also shot a career-low 71 in the first round last season. Emrey will start the second round in a tie for 10th.
Senior Olafia Kristinsdottir was 4-over par in a three-hole stretch on Friday but she played the other 15 holes at even-par and finished-up with an opening round 76. She is in a tie for 25th after 18 holes.
Freshman Elizabeth Doty and junior Marissa Dodd each carded rounds of 6-over 78 on Friday while freshman Sierra Sims posted a 10-over 82. Dodd was 5-over through the first seven holes but settled-in and played 1-over par the rest of the way.
Individually, Alabama's Stephanie Meadow opened with a 2-under 70 and leads a quartet of players by one shot heading into the second round.
The Demon Deacons are again in the opening pairing at 8:30 a.m. with Clemson and Oklahoma State. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the final two rounds.
