WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Black team won Games 4 and 5 against the Gold team to erase a 2-1 series deficit and take the 2013 Black & Gold World Series over the weekend at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park
Black won Game 4 9-5 on Friday and clinched the World Series win with a 6-4 win in the fifth and final game on Sunday.
In Game 4, Gold went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Jack Carey and a two-run double to right field by Kevin Jordan. Black then scored two in the second and then took the lead for good with a six-run third inning.
The Black team then scored its final run in the top of the fourth to go up 9-3. Black scored once in the bottom of the fourth and once in the bottom of the fifth, but that is as close as they would come.
For the Black team, Ben Breazeale went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Joe Napolitano and Matt Martin each had two hits as well, while Martin, Joey Rodriguez and Grant Shambley each knocked in a pair of runs.
Jordan was the only Gold team member to record more than one hit in Game 4, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
On the mound for the Black team, Parker Johnson pitched 3.2 innings of relief and got the win. He allowed just two hits and one run while collecting seven strikeouts of the 11 outs he recorded.
Black then carried its Game 4 momentum into Game 5 and scored the first six runs in the game, including three in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the fifth. Shambley went 3-for-5, and Matt Conway added two hits. Brezeale was a factor once again, homering for his only hit of the game.
Conway also earned the win on the mound by not giving up a run and surrendering just one hit in 3.0 innings.
The Gold team got a two-hit day from Jimmy Redovian who went 2-for-4 at the plate. Jack Carey drove in two and had a home run in Game 5, as well.
Napolitano, Breazeale and Rodriguez all recorded seven hits in the five-game series to pace the Black team offense. Matt Conway also had five hits and made three appearances on the mound, pitching 8.0 innings without giving up a run and recording five strikeouts.
For the Gold team, Kevin Conway led the way offensively with seven hits, while Morgan and Mondou each had six hits. Connor Kaden pitched 6.2 innings and struck out eight without giving up an earned run in three appearances.
Wake Forest will now gear up for the 2014 regular season, which begins on February 14 at home against Towson at 4 p.m. The Demon Deacons will also face Georgetown on Februrary 15 and will play a doubleheader with Marshall on February 16.
