WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Something about playing Campbell brings out the best in Wake Forest's Dearica Hamby as her career-high 28 points and 17 rebounds Wednesday helped push the Demon Deacons past Campbell 73-65.
After career-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds against the Fighting Camels (1-1) last season, Hamby topped both totals on Wednesday. She also added three steals and three blocks. The double-double was her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
Hamby's running mate Chelsea Douglas didn't have the prettiest of games but two of her four three-pointers came late in the second half to help stave off the Camel attack. Douglas finished the night with 22 points and two assists.
Freshmen Ataijah Taylor and Jill Brunori also had solid games as Taylor finished in double-figures for the second-straight game with 10 points while Brunori added seven points and 10 rebounds.
Campbell had three players score in double-figures led by Jessica Moore with 19 points and seven rebounds.
The game lacked any kind of pace as a total of 55 fouls were called between the two teams. That may have led to the sluggish shooting nights for both sides. The Deacs shot 36.5 percent from the floor but did make over 76 percent from the line. Campbell was just 32.8 percent from the floor but hit 10-of-20 from beyond the arc.
Wake Forest raced-out to a 7-0 lead and pushed the advantage to 19-9 just over halfway through the opening half. Campbell hung tough by knocking down shots from beyond the arc and cut the lead to 27-22 at the 3:09 mark. But a lay-up by Hamby and a good rebound and put back by Brunori helped spark a 12-1 run to close the half for the Deacs.
Wake Forest led 39-23 at the break and seemed to have all the momentum. Hamby had secured her double-double in the first half alone, leading everyone with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
A lay-up by Hamby off a nice feed from Douglas in the first 10 seconds of the second half gave Wake its largest lead of the night but Campbell slowly started its comeback. Over the next 10 minutes, the Camels used a full court press to chop the lead down to single-digits at 54-45 with 9:29 left.
Two minutes later, Campbell was within two as a 9-2 run, keyed by three-pointers from Kiera Gaines and Janelle Brown, trimmed the Wake Forest lead to 56-54. Hamby's lay-in with 6:06 left in the game pushed the lead back to four and stopped a field goal drought of almost four minutes for the Deacs.
Campbell got to within two again at 60-58 but a three-pointer by Douglas and a lay-in by Hamby shoved the lead right back out to eight at 67-59 with 2:50 to play. The margin never went below six the rest of the way as the Deacs made four of five free throws in the final minute to secure a 73-65 victory.
Wake Forest will have a quick turn-around as it heads to Newar, Del., this Friday to take on Delaware. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
